Ultimate Wild Thing

I'm really looking forward to seeing Spike Jone's feature film of Where The Wild Things Are. It was one of my favorite books as a kid (and still is one of my faves). I like how these big monsters aren't really scary. Then I started to think how Totoro is like the Ultimate wild thing. Some giant creature (even bigger than the wild things) that isn't scary at all. If anything, he looks like something you want to hug all the time. So this little piece is of Max meeting Totoro. Rar!

Howdy!
Big fan of WTWTA and Totoro -- nice illustrator's dream mash-up! Both represent a nice generational bridge for my daughter and I -- I introduced her to both works at the same time and she loved them both as well.

If I might offer a bit of constructive criticism, I think the crop could be widened just a bit to include those distinctive chest markings that Totoro has. I think it's essential to conveying the fact that this is Totoro and not just another random "wild thing". I wouldn't have known it was supposed to be Totoro if you hadn't said so.

Otherwise-- nice!

Hope that didn't offend you. I didn't mean to barge in with a critique right off the bat. I've just discovered your blog and I had to chime in. I really love your style and I've added you to my "google reader" blog subscription list.

Keep posting!

This is great! I could tell it was him from his claws. Kind of reminds me of the shot in the movie where the older sister sees Totoro for the first time from beneath her umbrella, at the bus stop- one of my favorite moments in the movie.

Also thanks for the Mush Stool. You know what I'm talkin' about...

Thanks for the critique Pop-Monkey. I thought about having the chest markings, and they were there in the initial sketch, they just never made it to the final. I cropped it so that Max was more of the focus. Yeah, the inspiration for this was when Satsuki does look under her umbrella and sees Totoro scratch himself. It was all about the claws for me.
